Silver Fish

Silver Fish FAQ's

What Are Silver Fish?

The insect known as a Silver Fish (Lepisma saccharina) is a common sight, especially in older properties. The silver fish belongs to a group of wingless insects called Bristletails that number around 600 species ranging form 15 - 25mm in size and as its common name suggests, it is silver and fish like in the way that it moves across a surface.

These insects are very fast and secretive. The only time you generally see them is when you turn on a light in a dark place and see them scurry away into the darkness of the nearest hiding place. The Latin name of these insects hints at the diet these pests enjoy, which is primarily composed of carbohydrates like simple sugars, flour and other nutrient substances found in things like dandruff and hair.

The places you are most likely to see them are in drying rooms, bathrooms (especially under baths) and other places where they like a mixture of warmth, high humidity and low light. These insects are adaptable and a 20mm long bristletail was recently seen feeding on dandruff collected on the shoulder of an elderly man, in a welsh hospital. Staff tried to remove it, but it crawled back into the safe confines within the patients shirt collar before it could be caught.

Can Silver Fish Bite?

Reportedly no!

Are Silver Fish & Bristletails Dangerous?

They are not dangerous, but in large numbers can cause losses of books and other paper products. These insects are a nuisance and not a danger.

What Does a Silver fish Treatment Cost?

silver fish are very hardy little creatures and although they are very small, they can live for some years. the standard methods of control include the use or combinations of both residual surface sprays and fumigation. Some of the items that they feed on are quite delicate so treatments need to be customized to ensure safety to both people and materials.

We try as far as possible to mirror the subsidised pest control rates offered by the local authority but our services are faster, more thorough and more flexible. With the council you may need to wait a couple of weeks or more for pest control services, during busy periods. We on the other hand are usually on site within hours or even faster if it is an emergency. We do charge a small inspection fee but this is refundable against any treatment carried out.

How Quickly Can You Get To Us?

Our standard, same day Pest Control Service for Silver Fish Control is always available, and for extra peace of mind our 24 Hour Emergency Pest Control Service operates 24/7 so help is never far away.

Pest Control Advice

Getting rid of Silver Fish and other pests like ants, fleas and bedbugs is not as simple as many pesticide manufacturers will lead you to believe. The chemicals or poisons on offer in supermarkets and shops often have a fraction of the effect that is achieved through professional products and this means you are likely to get through many cans of treatment without actually achieving full control. As the only Bath pest control company offering a dedicated insect control service we are able to deliver pest control treatments that are often guaranteed to work.

Pest control is all about understanding the pest you are trying to eliminate or prevent. The Wasp for example creates a wasp nest early in the year so if you wanted to control wasps in Bath you would probably guess that checking for a new wasp nest in your loft in April and May would allow you to remove a wasp nest safely before it became too large. By understanding your pest, you are able to plan control in advance, before infestation occurs and the cost of elimination becomes high.
