Honey Bee Control & Removal - Clevedon

Honey Bee

Honey Bee & Swarm Control - FAQ's

Are Honey Bees Protected By Law?

No - but in our opinion control and removal of bees and bees nests should be tightly regulated. Honey bees are one of nature's true wonders and are a key reason we are able to enjoy the great wealth of fruits etc that is nature's bounty. After a good recovery in bee numbers last year we are hoping to have our very own hives up and running in 2011 and have a large number of land owners and local residents with space to put them in return for a little honey and a lot of feel good factor. Bees are disappearing not just in the UK but also across the globe and although there are many common diseases and pests of bees, scientists are still at a loss as to why so many are disappearing so fast. This has spawned a call to action, for a growing army of amateur bee keepers who want to help these creatures survive in greater numbers, so future generations have the chance to enjoy them. On that note think very carefully before considering the control of these amazing creatures think again if there is any way you can live along side them.

What Does a Honey Bee Treatment or Re-homing Cost?

As the local authority does not provide this service it's down to experts like our selves to manage bees in a way that respects public safety whilst still trying to strike a balance with environmental sensitivity. Sometimes we have to control swarms and sometimes as an absolute last resort, that means destroying them, especially where they invade peoples homes via chimneys etc. Where a swarm can be collected and re-sited, the cost is very reasonable, however if the colony requires chemical control, we have strict health and safety protocols to ensure that neighbouring swarms and colonies are not affected for both environmental and economic reasons, and this does increase the cost considerably. We are usually on site within hours or even faster if it is an emergency. We do charge a small inspection fee but this is refundable against any treatment carried out.

Why are some bees killed?

Not everyone loves bees and those who suffer both phobias and Anaphylactic shock from bee stings including adults and young children need to be protected. In the vast majority of cases, probably 95%, the bees disembark before we arrive or are collected to be re-homed in hives throughout our local countryside. What we have come to realise is that if we do not control the final 5% safely and sensitively there are plenty of chemicals amateurs can buy to kill the bees themselves at great risk to others, and often contaminating surrounding hives and causing untold damage to the local areas bee populations. For us we must stress control is a last resort and requires householder consent and written instruction during our inspection visit before we carry out any treatment.

How Dangerous Are Honey Bees?

Like all other insects with a sting in the Clevedon area, they are only aggressive when threatened or disturbed, however you must remember that a compact and settled swarm in a shrub or on a fence post etc is not protecting any brood so should not attack if left alone. An unsettled, fragmented swarm with lots of frantic activity across a broad area is likely to be more risky. What you need is one of experts to visit. Very often by the time we get to you the swarm has flown off anyway.

Are Honey Bee Stings Dangerous?

Honey bee venom is not pleasant and if you do get stung it is important to remove the sting by scraping it of with a nail or credit card as soon as possible. We all react differently to stings, and some people can die from a single sting. This is called  Anaphylactic Shock.

Pest Control Advice

Getting rid of Honey Bees and other insects like ants, wasps and bedbugs is not as simple as many pesticide manufacturers will lead you to believe. The chemicals or poisons on offer in supermarkets and shops often have a fraction of the effect that is achieved through professional products and this means you are likely to get through many cans of treatment without actually achieving full control. As the only Clevedon pest control company offering a dedicated insect control service we are able to deliver pest control treatments that are often guaranteed to work.

Pest control is all about understanding the pest you are trying to eliminate or prevent. The Wasp for example creates a wasp nest early in the year so if you wanted to control wasps in Clevedon you would probably guess that checking for a new wasp nest in your loft in April and May would allow you to remove a wasp nest safely before it became too large. By understanding your pest, you are able to plan control in advance, before infestation occurs and the cost of elimination becomes high.

WaspKill UK are here to help - so why not give us a call and put your trust in the experts.
